Week 2 : Full of surprises!
While we learnt the art of patience in week 1, week 2 was also more demanding.
As a parent, you really aren't an expert but you are more caring and focused on your childs progress than probably any doctor or nurse out there. So, ideally while you can go multiple times and stay with the baby; what really works wonders is the balance of expertise and care.
Week 2 for my son saw many different things - for one slowly but steadily he reached the weight of 2 kg which was the one he was born at. It also saw us seeing him in blue light the second time around. And above all, with the 2 kg mark, the doctor started bottle feed once a day for him.
Imagine the joy of the parent, whose little child had been taking feed via a pipe going through his mouth to his throat; for them their child getting the chance of bottle feed! When in NICU, every bit of progress counts and is worth a celebration really!
But then surprise - he is too slow with the feed. So all your hopes of having him home sooner just vanish. The next day also hope is low, and then the next day you see the slow feeding pattern and you somehow make up your mind that patience needs to strengthen and while doing so, you call our a silent prayer.
And then suddenly to your surprise that night, the nurses were able to give him all feeds via bottle. And this to you is the most joyous surprise that day!
